Strange searches

SOMEONE came here having looked for the phrase below. After I laughed heartily I figured that I should try to answer their query.

I suppose you know your toddler is emo when they start writing poetry about not being understood, stamped on hearts and boredom; then you should probably be concerned. But then again I wouldn't be too unduly worried because they'll have grown out of it by the time they are potty trained. Hope that helps :)

Always carry your camera - 365

ONCE again I am going to throw my own rules out the window and post two pics for my 365. You just never know what you are going to see, always carry your camera.

The first photograph was taken this morning as I walked to the bus stop going to work and spotted a tiny little doll on the pavement. I would have loved to have had more time to have a bit of fun with it, something like propping it up waiting on the bus or the like. But like most of us my morning is pretty regimental leaving little time for anything other than getting up and getting out.

So by the time Ryan Tubridy plays his first track of the morning I need to be out the door to get my bus which runs hourly and leaves me outside work in 15 to 20 mins. Unfortunately this is the only bus route that Dublin Bus has decided to cut completely in its recent announcement of cuts. I know I know I am digressing massively here so I'll post about that again.

And sorry to digress even more but that also reminds me of when I younger and being grounded was a cruel and dire punishment and we would go to the Plaza in Belfast on Saturday night. If I was still there when they played Bryan Ferry's 'Let Stick Together' I knew I was screwed as it was played at 12.15am practically on the dot and that meant that not only would I never make it home in time for my 12.30am deadline but the Black Taxis were finished for the night and I would have to wait for the odd straggler taxi making me even later.

So the original point, ahem, was that I didn't have time to mess about with something more than taking this pic, but I like it.

It's always worth looking down - spotted on the way to the bus

The next photograph was taken as I walked to get my bus home after work. And it is 'How much is that doggie in the window'. Anyways point of the post, carry your camera and sorry for rambling.

Honey's bottles - 365

I REALLY should at some stage put together a video of all the dog's tricks, I know I have bored you at different stages with all her wonderful cuteness, but there's more. One of her favourite play things of which there are many is empty plastic drink bottles. She can even get all enthusiastic and knock over bottles that aren't empty cos she wants to play.

She'll throw it around the place and pounce on it, once she is sure she has killed it, she will then prepare the carcass by stripping all its paper off before diligently working to unscrew the cap and she always manages to do it too. This was taken while lying down on my sick sofa last night.

Well placed ad - 365

ONCE again I am going to kinda cheat on my version of the 365 project by posting pics from the last couple of days today, but I have been floored with another bad cold and pretty much incapable of doing anything other than cough, moan, blow my nose, cough and moan some more.

So apologies if you've been in contact and I haven't gotten back to you, I have a long list of catching up to do. Anyway here's Wednesday's picture which shows a pretty strategically placed advertisement in the day's Daily Mail opposite a photograph of the crowds who turned out for Obama's inauguration.

Must. Clean. Desk - 365

I HAVE to say it is kinda hard to make time during the day while at work to take a pic a day but I endeavour on.

Today was freezing and it was too cold to even think about venturing out with the camera. Course by the time I go home it is dark, hence the amount of night time shots in this series so far. So today I snapped my desk, you wouldn't believe I did actually clear this lot up at the start of the day...

Dear Jim, please can you fix it for me...

LIKE countless other kids I once wrote to Jim'll Fix It and asked him if he could fix it for me to meet Tony Hart and help him with whatever fantastic art piece he would be doing that day. I must have been about eight or nine years old and I have to say there was a large amount of disappointment that I never heard back from the show.

I think I reckoned that because I had never seen anyone get onto Take Hart via Jim'll Fix It (though it was possible that I had missed it of course) that I had a good chance. I really did, probably because I wanted it a lot.

I loved Tony Hart, I thought he was amazing and I so wanted to meet him.

Then when I was 13 I had to get something out of my Dad's pocket and found my letter to Jim'll Fix It that my Dad had never posted, I never even had a chance to get on the show. I laugh now thinking that I was actually annoyed at that, even some years later at the age of 13.

When I think of it now; well that's a different story.

I'm sad to learn that Tony Hart died today, he was an inspiration, even if I didn't get to take part in Take Hart. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

PS Rabble Muse has just shared with me her memory of Tony Hart, a subject she is still smarting over. Despite sending in numerous art pieces, every week in fact, she never made it to the gallery.

Going one, two, one, two, testing, was as far as you'll get me performing.

The Glimmerman, Stoneybatter

The Glimmerman

Looking out through Trinity

I AM half cheating here, I took this yesterday but didn't get to post until now , so in my mind it still counts as part of my 365, I did say when I started that I wasn't going to stop just because I miss some days or don't get to post in time. So this is for yesterday and I have another for today.

Bank of Ireland 365 :)

Central bank

THIS IS a photomerged image composed from two shots, it is not meant to be perfectly aligned, I enjoy the panoramic effect of a couple of pics stitched together. At some stage I want to take that further this year and try a Hockney photo collage. I have tried a few times half-heartedly but should make a concerted effort to do it properly (and that means print them out and do it manually).

View this large. You can also view another image I did like this from Scotland over the summer composed of about six images.

In 2009 you shall fall in love

In 2009 you shall fall in love, apparently

SPOTTED on the toilet wall in the Stagshead. I am sure the person waiting their turn outside was wondering why there were flashes going off inside the cubicle. I tried using the available light but it just wasn't happening. Anyway it would take more than a flash in a cubicle to embarrass me.

No 09 cars so far this year

THERE'S an interesting letter in today's Irish Times, I can't link to it permanently so I screen grabbed it. Come to think of it I haven't seen one either!

Moon through my window

MOon

The moon as I was going to bed last night, through my window and then via a tripod shot out the back yard. I set the ISO to 200, the shutter speed was 1/200 at f5.6 which I then pushed to -5 stops so I could get some detail of the moon face.

Nominations open for 2009 Irish Blog Awards

NOMINATIONS have opened for the 2009 Irish Blog Awards and will close at 6pm on January 14th, so don't forget to nominate your favourite blogs, you can find the nomination form on the awards website.

Damien has been hard at it working away organising this year's awards which for the first time are moving to Ireland's third capital city, Cork. Hey I am a nordie, Belfast is the number 2 city ;)

But back to the weekend, personally I can't wait, we have a full posse going, Young Wan, Nanny, as well as some pals and we are heading down for the whole weekend. It should be mighty craic. It is hard to believe it is already a year since the last awards.

Over the last couple of photomeets and other bloggy events we have talked about having a photomeet in Cork on the Saturday afternoon. Hopefully if you are interested in meeting up with a gang of photobloggers you'll be about on Saturday afternoon. What do people think?

EDIT: I should have said, not that you don't already know, but the 2009 Irish Blog Awards take place on Saturday February 21st 2009, at the Cork International Airport Hotel

New Year (Photography) resolutions

Catching up on some emails over the weekend I swung by Photojojo, which is an excellent photography newsletter and I spotted their photography New Year's resolutions, some of which I had already resolved to do. If you are into photography they are well worth a look at.

Things like archiving better, something I need to get more organised with. My plan is to open up two files each month starting with January, one for work and a personal one. Currently any work I do is stored in a named folder before eventually being stored on a spare hard drive. I am also toying with some kind of hard copy of what is where, an easy reference guide if that’s possible. Or maybe that’s where tagging and the like comes in, but they are generally tied to a photo programme. The problem with a folder that is just dated for me is that it would not be unusual to have two work events on one day not to mention the odd pic of my own taken along the way, so how do I catalogue an image of say a moment on a bus so that I remember where it is when I look for easy retrieval in the future.

My plan is that each month I will have two files of all the images I have taken that month, with duplicates and non-usable shots deleted, or that’s the idea anyway. So far I have opened up the January 2009 file but haven’t yet deleted the pics I don’t want. I still find that hard to do, but I must be ruthless and mindful of space.

I also want to print more and often. A flickr pal, Mymsie, was staying with us over the summer during her Irish holiday from LA and she gave out yards that I haven’t any pictures up on my house walls yet. The habitat frames I bought last year sit waiting by the side of the telly for someone with a decent drill to put them and shelves up. I did try myself and ended up putting a useless hole in the wall. It is ridiculous that I have none up yet. I find it hard to believe that we are living there a year, never mind the fact that once we moved in the work I planned to finish around the place never happened. Hey I’m a busy woman. But that is a priority for me over the coming weeks.

For a long time I have toyed with the idea of doing a project 365, a pic a day for a year and what better way to start than on New Year’s Day which I did. I don’t plan to feel any pressure doing this, if I don’t manage it I don’t manage it, but I aim to give it a good go. Whether or not an image deserves a photo of the day mantle is another matter, I thought I was going to be stuck yesterday and started taking pics of a cabbage cut in half, luckily I was saved by some beautiful evening light. In addition if I don’t capture anything for a couple of days I am not going to freak out either and throw my hands up in the air, I’ll just either do a sneaky catch-up or ignore the missing days. Either way my main plan is to have fun with this not make it a chore.

In 2009 I also plan to try and make more money from photography, camera upgrade not withstanding, how I plan to do that is another matter, we’ll see how it goes. A few other photography projects are also in the pipelines, but more on them in the future if and when they materialise. One other personal project for the year is to work on an 18th birthday book for the Young Wan for her coming of age next January.

I don’t want it to be a rush job, done at the end of November in a panic, I want to take my time, source all my pics (many of my film images of her over the years have been given to relatives before I got copies so I need to do a massive hoke into what I actually have and digitise them) and put them together in a blurb book, I have started but still have a long way (months) to go before I am completely happy with it.

So that’s about it with my photography New Year resolutions, have you made any?

My favourite pics of 2008 - part 1

I HAVE been working on a end-of-year review and this is the first part of a two-poster on some of my favourite pics of the year, once again thanks to Claire for the templates which made this a much more interesting layout. (One of the things I definitely want on a new blog template is the capability of posting bigger images.)

Anyway part two will be posted shortly, eh once I do, I mean finish it, and I will try to compile the top searches and what not in another post, which as usual contains some ahem saucy search terms to say the least. So for now back to the year past's pics, ha trying saying that drunk!

Another year another birthday

ONE OF the last events of Christmas in our house is the Young Wan's birthday which takes place tomorrow. Once that happens, other than the tree going down, Christmas is over.

I can't believe she is going to be 17, mm just had a feeling of deja vu there.

Anyway Happy Birthday darling, jaysus 17, FFS. I need to lie down.
