Dear Jim, please can you fix it for me...

LIKE countless other kids I once wrote to Jim'll Fix It and asked him if he could fix it for me to meet Tony Hart and help him with whatever fantastic art piece he would be doing that day. I must have been about eight or nine years old and I have to say there was a large amount of disappointment that I never heard back from the show.

I think I reckoned that because I had never seen anyone get onto Take Hart via Jim'll Fix It (though it was possible that I had missed it of course) that I had a good chance. I really did, probably because I wanted it a lot.

I loved Tony Hart, I thought he was amazing and I so wanted to meet him.

Then when I was 13 I had to get something out of my Dad's pocket and found my letter to Jim'll Fix It that my Dad had never posted, I never even had a chance to get on the show. I laugh now thinking that I was actually annoyed at that, even some years later at the age of 13.

When I think of it now; well that's a different story.

I'm sad to learn that Tony Hart died today, he was an inspiration, even if I didn't get to take part in Take Hart. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

PS Rabble Muse has just shared with me her memory of Tony Hart, a subject she is still smarting over. Despite sending in numerous art pieces, every week in fact, she never made it to the gallery.

I think Irish kids didn't exist for British television the same way the Republic didn't exist in the weather reports, although my friend did once win a Blue Peter badge.
I'll miss Tony Hart.

I don't think I actually remember children appearing on Take Hart, just their pictures.

@Allan Cavanagh yeah I don't seem to remember any Irish kids on it.

@The Great Wee Azoo, Jim would have been able to fix it for me :)

I'm sad to think your Dad didn't post your letter. I wrote to JFI and at least I recieved a rejection response which put the whole ambition to bed.

I wouldn't send any of my beautiful art works due to the disclaimer. Double whammy - you don't get your work shown and you don't get it back. Oh no!

@anonymous while there is a teeny tiny part of me that thinks I was doomed before I began, theres a bigger part that thinks about the fact my Dad carried that letter about for years, which is special.

@Audrey LOL not even with a stamped address envelope, thats bleedin terrible.
